Tin, the Forgotten Metal of the AI Era: Three Supply Bottlenecks Collide with Solder Demand in Every Server

The small, concentrated tin market enters a deficit: Myanmar, Congo, and Indonesia choke supply while the AI hardware boom boosts solder demand, enriching pure-play miners.

Causal chain: Myanmar: sluggish restart of Man Maw mine → Indonesia: licensing turmoil and depleting deposits → Congo: Bisie in the shadow of M23 conflict → AI hardware boom drives solder consumption → Deficit in a small market, inventories near lows → Tin prices remain structurally elevated → Scarce pure-play tin miners expand margins

What this thesis rests on

Each one is a statement that has to be true. We go back to every live thesis on a schedule and check these against public sources, so each leg carries either what we found or the date we look next.

Checked every 14 days. The first review of this thesis is past due and sits in the queue.

  1. Myanmar's Man Maw mine in Wa State does not return to pre-August-2023 output during the horizon: Chinese imports of tin concentrate from Myanmar stay below their 2022 monthly average through 20 November 2026.

  3. Alphamin keeps all-in sustaining cost below USD 20,000 per tonne of tin sold in every quarter reported during the horizon, preserving the operating leverage the thesis rests on.

The Invisible Metal of Electronics

Tin represents one of the smallest and most neglected metal markets globally: annual worldwide consumption stands at roughly 370,000–380,000 metric tons, approximately one-hundredth the size of copper. Roughly half of this demand is consumed as solder—the indispensable conductive glue holding together every printed circuit board, from smartphones to AI accelerator clusters. A market of this miniature scale lacks buffers: a disruption of merely a few percentage points of global supply suffices to tip the physical balance into acute deficit.

Day 30 of 120: basket +11.3%

The first quarter of the horizon is behind this thesis. The equal-weight basket stands at +11.3% since publication day. The benchmark (S&P 500) returned +3.6% over the same window, so the basket is ahead of its market by 7.7 percentage points. The strongest contributor is MLX (+22.9%), the weakest is AFM (-2.0%). 90 days remain until the verdict.

August 5, 2026

Basket crossed +10% since publication

This basket is at +10.3% since publication, 13 days after the thesis was posted. The benchmark (S&P 500) returned +4.3% over the same window, so the basket is ahead of its market by 6.1 percentage points. The strongest contributor is 000960 (+17.6%), the weakest is AFM (-1.0%). This is not a change of status: the horizon keeps running and the verdict only lands once it expires.
